As healthcare providers, we are constantly striving to better serve our communities and ensure access to quality care for all. With that goal in mind, I want to share some exciting news about the future of my practice and, more importantly, the future of healthcare in Canada.
I have closed my practice to new patients. This decision comes as I eagerly anticipate the transformative changes expected in 2026 to modernize the Canada Health Act. While details are still emerging, it's anticipated these changes will allow Nurse Practitioners (among other providers) to provide publicly funded, medically necessary healthcare – a monumental step forward for our healthcare system.
This shift has been a long time coming, and I am incredibly enthusiastic about its potential. While the specifics of implementation are not yet fully public, I intend to participate in the publicly funded system and work alongside my fellow healthcare professionals to deliver comprehensive and accessible care.
By preparing now, I can effectively transition to the new system in 2026 and be ready to serve the community in this expanded capacity. My existing patients will, of course, continue to receive the same dedicated care they have come to expect.
While we await the full details of the 2026 changes, I am confident that this is a significant step forward. The ability for Nurse Practitioners, Pharmacists, Midwives and other highly skilled providers to fully contribute within the publicly funded system will greatly enhance access to care and promises a stronger, more resilient healthcare system for generations to come.
